High Dynamic Range Photography

High dynamic range photography for short (HDR) explained is a combination of a series of images you've taken yourself, merged together and changing the contrast and adding filters to make your photograph look almost dreamy like... To do this you will need a certain scene but to experiment use somewhere with a lot of detail; for example somewhere you can see trees, clouds and buildings.

Then what you do is you set your tripod and camera up (you must use a tripod so you have the exact same image in place else it will not work with a variety of locations) keep the shutter and the amount you have zoomed in exactly the same the only thing we will be changing is the aperture.

What you need to do is capture a light a normal and a dark image of your choice of scene; when i say light normal and dark some people look at it like that but the way i do it is for example: capture one image with all the detail in the sky, the next image capture the buildings with all the detail (don't worry about the rest of the image) and then capture an image of all the trees in detail.

For doing this technique you will need a minimum of two images to combine depending on what you photograph. Next is the tricky part! merging them all together... Here are some screen shots of how i done this.

Click 'merge HRD pro' and it will come up with a box then click choose files

Select or highlight your chosen images

Once you've chosen your images click ok and it will merge all your
                                           images into one.

This is how my images turned out

On the top right hand corner you will have a drop down
bar which you can chose a variety of scenes. I chosen
the most over the top one to show you the changes.

This setting is called 'Surrealistic' It proves how much of
a change you can make. Not only can you change this
you can play around with all the other things like exposure,
gamma etc until you have your perfect image.

These were my three images which i had chosen to merge and this was the final outcome...
