What are complimentary colours?
Complimentary colours are colours on the colour wheel which are opposite each other, although they are opposites, they complement each other and make each other stand out.

For
example; when taking an image if you captured an orange on a blue background it
would make the orange stand out more. Complimentary colours are used in
photography everyday and it is one of the most popular techniques and is
especially used in portraits to bring out certain features like eyes and
clothing.
This
image Steve McCurry taken ‘Afghan girl’ is one of the most iconic images ever
taken and he used the colour of the girl’s headscarf that was red and
complimented it with the opposite colour that is green, this made this image
change dramatically.
Then
McCurry moved ‘Afghan girl’ somewhere else with a green background that then
made the photo look completely different and stand out. Using complimentary
colours I think made this image so iconic.
